What is Stridhan?
Stridhan refers to the property of a woman acquired before, during or after her marriage.
What is included in Stridhan?
Stridhan includes cash, savings, gifts, property, utensils, clothes, etc. that the woman has received from her in-laws or her family or collected and saved with her own income, before, during or after her marriage.
Who has rights over Stridhan?
Only the woman who has been bestowed with or has collected the same at the mentioned time has the sole rights over the Stridhan.
Can husband/ family/ in-laws claim rights over Stridhan?
Neither husband nor family, in-laws or any other person have any claims in the Stridhan as the woman has whole and sole legal rights over her stridhan.
If mother or mother-in-law gifts jewellery/ property/ gifts/ etc. to her daughter or daughter-in-law which was part of her Stridhan, can she claim any rights over it?
The minute that the said jewellery/property/gifts/etc. have been GIFTED to the daughter or daughter in law at the said time, the same no longer is a part of their Stridhan and is rightfully the daughter or daughter-in-law’s property.
What is the relief available for unlawful taking away of Stridhan?
A complaint under section 406 of the Indian Penal Code be filed for unlawful or forceful custody of Stridhan by in-laws or any other person. Know more on Section 406
